Web Design for Waabigwan Roots Collective

I am currently designing the website and visual identity for my project, the Waabigwan Roots Collective. The collective is a grassroots initiative created to foster accessible and community-centered spaces where Indigenous peoples and allies can engage in advocacy, policy-making, climate justice, food sovereignty, cultural revitalization, and community care. Through this work, I hope to connect individuals with opportunities for collective learning, leadership, relationship-building, and community-driven change.

The collective is named in honour of my nokomis, Ngo-Waabigwan, whose strength, love, and resilience continue to inspire both my creative practice and community work. A dedicated section of the website explores her story, the meaning behind Waabigwan, and the lasting impacts of residential schools. Her presence continues to shape the heart of this project and my understanding of storytelling, memory, survival, and relational care.

Designing the visual identity and website for my non-profit, including hand-crafted florals created in Figma.

Alongside the written and research-based aspects of the project, I have been designing custom Anishinaabe-inspired florals and visual elements throughout the website. Creating these illustrations has been both rewarding and exhausting. I spent countless hours experimenting with symmetry, spacing, colour balance, and composition in an attempt to make the visuals feel soft, intentional, and emotionally grounded. The process challenged me creatively and technically, especially while learning new design tools and trying to build a visual identity that felt authentic to both myself and the collective.

I am still refining the colour palette and overall visual language of the project. I want the website to feel calm, inviting, and comforting, almost like walking into a mother’s arms. Much of the design process has centered around creating a space that feels gentle and welcoming while still holding conversations surrounding Indigenous sovereignty, grief, resistance, community care, and healing.

This project continues to evolve through research, digital design, and storytelling. Website currently in development.
